When you can use EQ, your child's future becomes freer and more joyful.

Parenting Journey Lab
What is EQ?

EQ (Emotional Intelligence Quotient)

The ability to understand your own and others' emotions, and use that understanding to guide thought and action.

1
Perceive:Notice both your own and the other person's emotions
2
Understand:Recognize the thoughts and values behind the emotion
3
Regulate:Handle the emotion purposefully, without ignoring it
4
Apply:Turn that awareness into decisions and actions
What does EQ look like in practice?

When a friend comments on your diet,EQusing EQ:

You

Lately I've just been having soup and rice on weeknights. I feel lighter and better.

Friend

Wait, that's all you eat at night? That's not enough nutrition, isn't it pointless since you'll just rebound?

Perceive:You: feel criticized and a little hurt / Friend: seems not to think highly of your eating habits
Understand:You: hurt because you expected encouragement / Friend: maybe just worried about nutrition and rebound
Regulate:Without jumping to conclusions, prepare to explain that you eat well at breakfast and lunch
Apply:Without being defensive, honestly share your situation and appreciate their concern

You

That's just dinner - I eat plenty at breakfast and lunch, so I think I'm okay.

Why use EQ in parenting?
Brain development stages: the prefrontal cortex (reasoning and emotional regulation) develops between ages 5 and 11

What matters isn't which age is the turning point, but thatthe way a child learns to handle emotions early in life becomes the foundation for adulthood. Adults can still learn this, but it takes more time and effort. Building the habit while the prefrontal cortex is still "under construction" helps children grow into adults who aren't easily overwhelmed by their emotions.

What does EQ parenting look like in practice?

When kids fight over a toy,EQusing EQ:

Child A

Mom! B took it from me!

Child B

No, I had it first!

Perceive:You: "here we go again" / Child A: angry about losing the toy / Child B: anxious about being blamed
Understand:You: disappointed because you wanted some quiet time / Both kids: want to be heard and understood
Regulate:Calm yourself first, then help both children calm down before talking
Apply:Choose to listen to each child's side, one at a time

Parent

B, A - I'll listen to each of you one at a time. B, can you go first and tell me about using it first?

Steps of EQ Parenting

Step1

Learn the knowledge and skills of EQ

Step2

Adults (parents / guardians / teachers) develop EQ

Step3

Adults (parents / guardians / teachers) apply EQ in education.

Step4

Children develop EQ

Step5

When you can use EQ, your child's future becomes freer and more joyful.

With EQ, you can naturally handle your own and others' feelings, even in difficult situations.

For example,

Getting emotional over the same argument with your spouse, again and again.

→ Using EQ →

You and your spouse become able to have constructive discussions.

For example,

A child who won't tell you anything about school.

→ Using EQ →

Your child starts opening up on their own.

For example,

When your child, as an adult, is spoken to negatively by a boss.

→ Using EQ →

They stay composed under harsh words, draw out their boss's thinking, and build a good relationship.

"Gaiety's EQ Parenting" is where you gain the skills and knowledge of EQ.

As parents, we all wish for our children to grow up well. But behind every behavior, there is always a feeling. When things aren't going well, that child may simply be longing to be understood.

In Japan, where compassion and harmony are so valued, children need the ability to understand their own feelings while also caring for those around them. A simple "I see how you feel" or "I understand" can become a source of real strength for a child. We are not just raising children - we are shaping their futures.

SCHOOL LEADER

After serving as an international education coordinator and teacher for the Chigasaki City Board of Education, Gaiety founded Shonan International School (now an IB World School) in 1996, dedicated to nurturing globally-minded individuals who respect diverse worldviews and values. She has supported over 2,000 parents and children, many of whom have gone on to thrive in a wide range of fields.

EQ SPECIALIST

She has served as Chief Education Planner for the Chigasaki City Board of Education and as a training instructor for foreign language activities for the Fujisawa City Board of Education. At Shonan International School, she introduced EQ workshops for parents and teachers as a core pillar of early childhood education, and she also consults for companies, including supervising ALC Bilingual School's programs. She is a certified coach with Six Seconds, the world's largest EQ network.

FAQ
Parenting involves many intertwined factors. Why did that particular way of speaking work? Why did the same words work yesterday but not today? Behind this lies a structure of sequence, cause and effect, and timing. Understanding this bigger picture builds a foundation you can apply to parenting no matter the situation.
We can't guarantee results, but there are changes commonly seen across the 2,000+ parents and children Gaiety has worked with: children who can make their own decisions, who listen well to others, and who can involve others to solve problems even after setbacks. Once emotions become easier to process, the brain's energy shifts from "worrying" to "thinking."
Many participants tell us that even a single session changed how they see their child and how they speak to them. We recommend starting with just one session to try it out.
This is open to anyone currently raising a child, regardless of age. Research shows that the younger the child, the more they're influenced by how their parents engage with them when it comes to developing emotional intelligence. Learning early can make a big difference in the long run.
Yes, absolutely. Gaiety has provided education and support in Japanese in Japan for many years, and all sessions are conducted entirely in Japanese.
Attending together as a couple is very welcome - sharing values and learning in real time makes it easier to put things into practice at home. That said, attending alone is also plenty effective.
Grounded in EQ (emotional intelligence), you'll learn how to engage with your child's emotions and the structure behind effective communication. Hearing real examples and perspectives from other parents is also a valuable part of the learning.

A Message from Our Founder

Hikaru Hirayama

Founder, Parenting Journey Lab

I first learned about EQ parenting through a monthly parent workshop that Gaiety runs at the international school my son attends.

What I learned was that the most essential thing for nurturing a child's resilience and self-esteem is for parents to truly observe and listen to their children.

Honestly, it was so different from the old-fashioned upbringing I had, that I was skeptical at first. But as I changed how I engaged with and spoke to my son, he changed too, right before my eyes - and before I knew it, parenting had gone from a source of worry to a source of joy. My wife and I were both deeply moved.

"If this knowledge could reach more families, how many parents would build better relationships with their children, truly enjoy parenting, and achieve the parenting they've always hoped for?"

Feeling this strongly, I drew on my own career in business development and planning to launch Parenting Journey Lab together with Gaiety.

What we offer isn't quite the same as the knowledge and skills you'd find in a typical parenting book. It's a practical approach to "EQ Parenting" that helps parents become their child's greatest source of understanding, and nurtures resilience and self-esteem.

Parents observe their children. Parents listen to their children.
In turn, children learn to trust themselves, and to like who they are.
Through this warm cycle, children grow more independent and develop the strength to enjoy living their own lives.

We believe you too will come to experience the impact of Gaiety's "EQ Parenting," which has already helped raise so many children in this way.

Voices from families practicing Gaiety's EQ Parenting

Valuing our own family's values

Before

I was searching for the generic "right answer" to parenting.

After

My spouse and I now share and discuss our own family's values - what matters most to us.

A shift in our approach to parenting

Before

I joined thinking it would be a casual workshop.

After

Seeing how seriously other participants engaged, I came to approach parenting as real, substantial learning.

"It's precisely because I'm not perfect that I need to keep learning"

Before

I felt a strong need to be perfect, and it was painful to admit my own shortcomings.

After

I came to believe that it's precisely because I'm not perfect that I need to keep learning, and realized that admitting my shortcomings is really about finding room to grow. I now truly value that parents, too, must keep learning alongside their children.

Updating our approach to education

Before

I was parenting based on old-fashioned, Showa-era ideas about education.

After

I moved away from those old-fashioned ideas and learned parenting from scratch, from the perspective of how children truly grow, making it a genuine part of who I am.
